Many of these eye-hurting monstrosities are a part the legacy of Le Corbusier, the biggest prick in all of architecture's history. If you don't beleve me, look him up in all of his conceited and beauty-stifling glory. Worst of all, many of these horrid edifices were constructed following the deliberate demolition of beautiful historic buildings, especially during the 1960s, when destroying historic landmarks and replacing them with featureless blocks of steel and glass was considered progress. Seeing the before and after pictures of the former and current buildings can be a quite sickening experience. Hopefully in the future, architecture will continue to diversify and learn from past mistakes.
